Shade Matching

At Middle East Dental Laboratory, achieving precise shade matching for tooth-colored restorations is essential to delivering high-quality results. Several key factors influence the accuracy of shade matching, with environmental considerations playing a crucial role.

Lighting

Lighting is a critical factor in dental shade matching. The common pull-down operatory lights are not ideal for this task. Instead, we recommend using overhead lights with full-spectrum, color-correcting bulbs that have a color rendering index (CRI) of 90 or above. These lights mimic natural daylight, offering the most accurate color representation.

Avoid direct sunlight to prevent distortion of the tooth color.

Color of Operatory Room & Accessories

The color of the operatory room can significantly affect shade matching. We advise using neutral tones, such as gray, for walls to prevent any color reflection that may influence the perceived shade. Additionally, ensure that accessories, including the patient’s bib, are also in neutral colors to avoid any interference with the tooth shade assessment.

Top Challenges in Shade Matching

  1. Lighting
Proper lighting is essential for accurate shade matching. Use color-correcting light bulbs and neutral colors in the operatory to enhance accuracy.
  1. Photography

For optimal results, follow these guidelines:
    • Distance: Position the camera close enough to capture only the teeth and surrounding tissue. Ensure the photos are focused and zoomed in.
    • Timing: Take photos at the start of the appointment when the teeth are hydrated. Avoid delays that may cause the teeth to dry out and alter the shade.
    • Positioning: Align the camera perpendicular to the teeth and ensure the patient is in a straight posture. Take photos from three angles: straight on, slightly to the right, and slightly to the left.
    • Flash: Prevent flash marks on the teeth or shade guide. Use a ring flash with a diffuser or a polarizing filter to minimize flash interference.
  1. Material Choice
Selecting the appropriate material is crucial for achieving the best aesthetic outcome. For anterior teeth, avoid materials like Solid zircon, which can be too opaque and affect the overall esthetics. Choose materials that offer the right level of transparency and match the natural tooth color.
